Title:What You Need To Know About Galaxy Interactions and Mergers
Abstract:Interaction and collision between two (or more) galaxies are common phenomena in the Universe. This is not a far off thing. About 4.5 billion years from now, our galaxy, the Milky Way, will collide with our large neighbor Andromeda (M31). In this talk, I will introduce the types of interacting galaxies and galaxy mergers and how to identify interacting galaxies/mergers in the Universe — in particular in large galaxy survey. Galaxy interactions have strong implication on galaxy evolution. In the talk, I will also discuss the impact of galaxy interaction on altering cold gas properties (nursery of stars), triggering star formation and AGN, and driving morphological transformation of galaxies. Finally, I will show the likely fate of our Milky Way within about the next 4.5 billion years.
