Title:From the Electron to the Higgs Boson — The Development of Particle Physics
Abstract:
Guided by the question “What is the material world made of?”, this report reviews the development of particle physics over the past century. Beginning with the discovery of the electron in 1897, it traces the paradigm shift from a “continuous” to a “discrete” worldview through Planck’s quantization of energy, Einstein’s light quanta, and Bohr’s atomic model. It then covers the establishment of a theoretical language for describing particle creation and annihilation, via quantum mechanics, Dirac’s prediction of antimatter, quantum field theory, and Feynman diagrams. The report goes on to explain how the quark model, electroweak unification, the Higgs mechanism, and quantum chromodynamics (QCD) together form the Standard Model, and reviews key experimental confirmations such as the W and Z bosons and the top quark. The story culminates in the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC, completing the final piece of the Standard Model. Finally, it summarizes the methodological cycle of “experimental anomaly → theoretical crisis → revolution → new experiments,” and looks ahead to unresolved mysteries such as dark matter and dark energy.
