TitleIf I Tell You: You, as a Physicist is What We Look for (to be a Data Scientist)
AbstractWe have experienced the progress of data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in the last few years. As a physicist or a person who learned some physics, how can we explain the phenomenon and leverage what we learned and contribute to the community? In machine learning, we usually sove the real-world puzzles by mathematical modeling. Quite frequently, we need to have a good understanding on some domain knowledge at the same time to have a good prediction outcome. That is very much similar to what a physicist does when he or she needs to find physical laws to interpret the world. In fact, a lot of excellent and bright data scientists or people who work on machine learning or AI are from the background of physics. In this talk, we attempt to introduce data science, machine learning and AI by domonstrating it on a set of real applications. From cases to cases, we learn that the background of physics has enriched the development of data science and AI in the last few decades and should continue being so in years to come. On the other hand, we also discuss how physics can be benefited by data science and AI approaches, known to be red hot topics in recent years. After all, we also share some thoughts on how we view the role of machines that may own AI in our future.

Short Bio
Hsing-Kuo Pao (Kenneth) received the bachelor degree in mathematics from National Taiwan University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from New York University. From 2001 to 2003, he was a post-doctorate research fellow in the University of Delaware, and later he joined in Vita Genomics as a research scientist. In 2003, he joined the department of computer science and information engineering in National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and now a professor in the department. His current research interests include machine learning methodology and its applications such as IoT analytics, computer vision and information security.

單位簡介

本系的重點研究領域包括:凝態物理、光電與奈米科學、高能與粒子物理、軟凝態物理與生物物理、原分子光學物理、及物理科學教育等。本系前身為臺灣省立師範學院理化系物理組,成立於民國三十五年(1946年)本校創校之始。民國五十一年(1962年)本系獨立成系,民國六十三年(1974年)成立物理研究所碩士班,民國八十年(1991年)成立研究所博士班。長久以來,本系肩負著培育臺灣中等學校物理科師資的重任,但也不忘在物理學術研究上求新求進步。至今本系培育出的學術人才已有一位中研院院士及近百位中研院研究員及大學教授,各行各業的高科技人材更是不勝枚舉。民國八十三年師資培育法改制後,本系已升級為尖端學術研究、科技應用研發、及中學師資培育三者齊備的系所。
